My old 85 245 Wagon has been a good one. She recently turned over 240K miles.
For the past few years, I've been using it as a work wagon, which means a lot of hauling of tools and parts, really heavy, around 600 to 800 lbs constantly.
She's gotten me a consistent 25 MPG, but lately, the transmission (M46 w/OD) has been making more noise. It's noticeable when idling in neutral with the clutch engaged, although I'm hearing a lot more noise in all gears.
I recently changed the fluid, front plug only, not the OD, and the magnetic plug had a lot of fine "Swarf" on it, which means there's been some wear in the gear box.
It's never been low of type F ATF, although the oil was old.
My question....What grade and viscosity of oil would you run in this transmission to get all the miles you could out of it?
I plan to completely flush it out and add new oil.
Any additives that might help?
I've got a spare M-46 for when she goes, but I'd like to put the swap off as long as possible.
Any help is appreciated.
