Carpet painting 200 1984

Hi folks,

Has anyone tried to either dye or repaint the carpet of a 240, and to what result?

It seems like spraying would work but how many cans would that take for a good job. I know nothing about dyes but it sounds like that would be more cost-effective. I am no talking about a major color change but going from dark brown to black...

The reason I'm asking is that I acquired a complete black interior trim set (GL trim) for my car, along with new door panels and armrests that I will use for my electric window installation. My current interior is brown. But I will be held back by the carpet. I want to pull the carpet, put good insulation under there, pass the wires I need to pass for rear windows and speakers, and put some black carpet in, but I don't have the carpet yet. There is no junkyard solution here and other options are too expensive.

I plan to some day being able to pay a professional to reupholster my seats and replace the carpet, but looking for an inexpensive solution in the meantime so I don't have silly brown carpet with a black interior. Mine just has one tear that I can stitch together but is otherwise in pretty good condition and should clean up real nice.

So....how about using a dye in a big pot or something?

Thanks!
