OK to swap ZF to AW transmission? 700 1988

Hi...great forum. I've just bought a 1988 740GLE with a bad ZF transmission. Otherwise, except for a couple of minor things, is in great shape. Knew it had a bad trans whin I bought it. Can't seem to find a good ZF trans and it has been suggested that I replace with the "better" AW trans. The junk yard will cut a channel in the overdrive solonoid to solve that problem and give me the drive shafts and oil lines for the change over. Has anybody here had this done and what kind of problems can I expect.
