965 Question re: Gas cap door, and gas cap 'tether'. 900 1997

When the my first 960 arrived, in 2005 with 128K miles, the gas cap was a Stant brand, and when removed for fueling it was just loose. The gas door has on its inside a few little bump things that look like something was there but is now gone.

I am used to the rather nice place on a 240 door that holds the gas cap, and find it hard to believe that a more luxurious Volvo has nothing.

I replaced the Stant cap with a cap from a non-op 240, same size and a Volvo part. Been there for a year or more.

Now I have the CE light on, and the guy at AutoZone said (1) they don't reset the light, and (2) the code, 440, means a sizeable problem in the evaporative emissions control system, like a bad vacuum line or a bad GAS CAP.

So today we bought a new Volvo gas cap. It has sort of tether that has a ring terminal on the end, as if it was to go under a nearby bolt or screw head. There is no nearby screw or bolt.

Do you know if the tether is attached to one of the bump things on the door? Or should it attach to the spring that closes the door?

Not a big deal, but one I would like to have right.

Thanks,

Bob
