94'Volvo 940 turbo transmision 900 1992

Hoping someone can help
Having what I believe is a transmision problem. Took her to my regular mechanic, who is great and most importantly, honest, said did not have the diagnostist equipment to fix the problem. Recomened taking her to the dealer$$$$$$$. Qustions to ask? IE Where would the trans write (report) the error? What CPU's flash memory would they be looking at?
Being a longtime Volvo owner (my first was a 1967 140) I know they all have have quirks, wing vents on the 70' models, the relay swich on the 940. Is this a quirk? Sputterers @ 2000 RPM. Trouble with gear engagement, but @ 50mph, smooth.
Any advice, Suggestions?
