Be thankful we have Volvo Engines! 200

This is a non-Volvo topic, but I just finished up bolting a new cylinder head to a Mitsu 4G64 block. Here is their head bolt torque specs:

1: Crank the head bolts to 58 ft-lb in a cross (not circle) pattern.
2: Then in reverse pattern, loosen all head bolts to 0 ft-lb.
3: Torque all 10 head bolts to 14 ft-lb in the same cross pattern.
4: Now, turn each head bolt 90 degrees clock wise in the cross pattern.
5: We thought we were all done, but wait, crank each head bolt another 90 degrees clockwise in the same cross pattern.

Any guess what the final bolt torque was on the head bolts? Alloy head, cast block? The average was 253 ft-lb! Is this a steel head gasket phenomenon or have I just lost touch with "modern" engines?
