manual transmission drain plug - is the hollow supposed to be packed? 200 1990

1990 244 DL

Junior got past inspection. Yay! However, when I drove away, Junior had an awful whine that increased in pitch with the transmission speed when I shifted in 1-4 gears, and diminished after a few miles. After consulting the brickboard, I decided to change my transmission fluid as a first step.

When I took the drain plug out and tried to clean it up, I noticed that it seemed hollow with a nipple in the center, around which was packed a considerable amount of gray 'stuff'. Is this 'stuff' supposed to be there as some sort of lubricant, or is it metal filings from 180+K miles that should be cleaned out?

Hopefully, the fluid change will solve my problem, and I will only have to finish tightening the gland nuts (my mechanic didn't do it before he did the alignment... GRRRRR!! My farmer friend is good with a welder, so he's offered a custom made-from-the-old-gland-nut spanner for me to use with a three foot pipe extension. Yay for farmer friends!)

Hopefully I'm only a week away from declaring Junior road-worthy after I test drive him for a bit and tighten the various belts...

Thanks for the input... it's much appreciated!

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can get Junior on the road!
