I have the 3 rear exhaust studs broken off flush with the head on my 242 Turbo. I have removed the exhaust manifold and turbo, gotten some various drills and a Dremel tool and had at them. But I don't seem to be making much progress. Access is bad, so I can't get a regular drill in there. The Dremel is a bit wimpy in power, and I've just managed to maybe remove 2mm of one stud so far.
Seriously considering removing the head, and either trying again with my drill or taking it to a machine shop.
I have done head removal before (my 16v, got to be easier than that!).
Has anyone gone either route? I'm also thinking if 3 of the studs are broken, are the others about to go? I certainly think if I tried to remove them, half of them would probably break also.
Is removing the head off the Turbo motors any more difficult than a non turbo car?
ANy tales of experiences welcome.
(and today's project is removing the ralcantrant(sp?) rear bolt on the 744's compression rod, and maybe putting on at least the front IPD sway bar.....)
