I just competed the job of repacking the rear wheel bearings on my son’s ’69. When I pulled the axles, which were pretty tight (although I didn’t measure the end play) there were shims between the axle housing and the backing plate on both sides. On the RHS were 2 shims, each ~.017” and on the left, one thick shim of .069”. I know all the manuals I’ve ever seen call for the shims to all be on the RHS, but I thought I would reassemble things they way I found them and check the result. Well the result was that there was just a touch of axle end play on both sides, just noticeable movement as George Downs advised a few years ago should be the case. And the axles turned freely, a happy situation.
However I not sure I want to leave things the way they are, being tempted to put all the shims on the RHS. Can anybody explain why the books (and the experts on this forum) specify shims on the RHS only?
Cheers,
Barry
