Inga (86 245D)was starting leaking around valve cover gasket and blew her dipstick up and did the spray oil trick. Got a new flame trap and installed it and had to get a junker hose for the big connection that went to the throttle body. After doing all that did the 740 FAQ check with the metal oil cap and it rattled up a storm. Also tried the heavy paper check over the oil cap hole and it blew off.
Got a new Breather box (dealer part), oring, big hose Dealer part, and oil dipstick orings, and breather box to flametrap adapter, and installed them all. Found an online 15% of parts when looking the phone number of the dealership. Did not have an Oring under the breather box when removed (that could be found anyway. Found that the adapter from the box to the flame trap had a lot of crud and rock hard, it was about 15% restricted. The old breater box did not seem that bad, is a ittle more heavy. The dipstick oring was flat and not a good seal at all.
Took the box off with a 13mm socket from the back side of the throttle body and removed the box out the front of the intake manifold. It only took an hour from start to finish, and I am slow at these things.
When Inga fired up the idle was as smooth as any time in her seven years with me. She had a small shake before (nothing major) and that was gone. The oil cap rattle check showed no popping up and down like before. The big change is that you can now feel a suction in the oil cap hole and the heavy paper check stayed in place. There was a lot of room for improvement in the crankcase vent system. Now she was running pretty good before the oil spill. But the idle is now smooth as it ever and you can really tell how the PCV should work. There seems to be more blow back when you pull the dipstick. Now to install the PUP Voltmeter and the week end project will have a check mark.
Engine Harness next.
