240 Wiper Clunk 200 1993

The wipers on our 1993 245 have a loud clunking sound as they operate. I removed the glove box and looked inside while the wipers ran and have located the problem to the mechanism where two rods connect and the right hand (passenger) side wiper arm is also connected. Is this assembly the "right side wiper transmission" in Volvo parts speak?

The loosness seems to be associated with the rod which connects from that point over to the driver's side wiper.

Is it likely that I need a new "wiper transmission"?

Has anyone else dealt with and fixed this problem? Any pointers before I do more disassembly would be great.
