Hi Guys,
I'm in the process of making plans for a transplant of an M46 5-speed transmission from an 85 240 (140k miles) into my 82 242 (300k miles). The transmission and rear axle are all that remain in original condition for the 82 242. Eveything else has been rebuilt or replaced.
The question for me is whether I should also consider trading the rear axle/differential over from the 85 240 to my 82 242? Both vehicles have standard Dana rear ends (neither is a limited-slip). This may be worthwhile if I should anticipate problems with the original rear end now that its passed the 300k mileage mark.
As background: my current differential has been running on Redline synthetic differential oil since it got to the 150k mileage mark, or about half its mileage liftime. There are currently no leaks in either rear end or apparent problems.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Regards, Dave
