Temp gauge occasionally fluctuating - thermostat? 200

Temp is usually good, little below halfway. One time it stayed at the bottom. Occasionally it goes almost up to the red line! (when just going on a regular day , like 50 degrees and level, I'm not towing or anything). I replaced the thermostat a couple of years ago when changing the coolant, so I'm wondering if it's the gauge and how best to tell if it's the gauge or the thermostat. Thanks.
