I've been chasing this Gremlin for 3 days now, no luck.
Here's the overview:
1- Car was running great, just stalling in turns with less than 1/4 tank gas. I pull in-tank sender unit out to inspect short hose. I broke soldered wires on unit lid inside. Parts yard did not have a 1987 replacement, I am told 1988 is a different unit.
2- I pull a 1988 unit anyway and see the only difference in wiring is the snap on connector is different. So, I hard wire the unit in place. Car starts - runs rough. I drive to gas station (3 blocks) and put just under 1/2 tank gas. I barely make it home.
3- I check the fuel sender ground - tighten it. Car starts and idles strong. I go 4 blocks and the car died. It never started again after that.
5- After several removals and installs of the sender unit, and fuel pump and filter - here is what I have:
--New fuel pump. It is getting power and works
--Fuel relay has 2 clicks. It works
--New fuel filter
--New in-tank filter sock
--Fuses are OK
--I disconnected all hoses today and blew air. No hoses seemed blocked.
--No fuel came out of the fuel line at the rail on the engine.
--The fuel filter was clear
--The attachments on the filter/pump were clear
--I blew in the metal tubes on the sender unit and pressure pushed gas out both tubes. Gas can get in/out of the tank.
Now, the bolt that secures the fuel line from the filter to the engine was bone dry. It appears I am not getting fuel passed the filter. I double checked and the filter is in the same direction as the old one.
I wired the pump with Purple on the positive and black on the negative.
If the pump works, the hoses are clear -- why no fuel passed the filter and to the engine?
Thanks,
Jamie
