I just replaced the alternator. It tested bad at the local auto parts store. The car has 335k miles. I did this about a month ago.
Yesterday the car died on the freeway. I pulled the battery and took it home to charge it. It read 66% and charged up to 100% so I figure the battery is fine.
I cleaned the battery contacts and checked the voltage at the alternator and battery and they are both the same. About 14.35 with no load on the car and about 13.35 at the battery when the load is full.
I must have a short somewhere. I took apart the cable connection at the battery anode and cleaned it all up and nothing is remarkable. The car seems fine now but it was fine before it died. Maybe I have an intermittent problem.
Does the alternator feed to the battery by way of the starter? Could I have a bad contact there? BTW I screwed up a about a month ago and for a second tried to just the car with the wrong polarity on the jumper cables. I think this trashed the diodes on the alternator, that were already marginalized by their age. My ABS light is not on, but I don't think my ABS works.
Looking for ideas. I am going to check the starter connections this evening.
Need help......anybody?
