SU air fliters

My new 122 is my first experience with SU carbs, and I'm getting lots of good advice on setting them up, and why they are better than the Weber conversions. That's not my question today.

The quesiton of the day is air filters. Expensive aren't they? I am wondering if anyone has taken the top and bottom plates off an old SU air filter assembly and then used an ordinary round filter, sort of like you would with a more traditional carb. Seems to me $10 apiece for a regular round filter is a lot cheaper than anything I've found for an SU.

Anyone tried it?
