Hey guys - Hope all is well. Longtime member but been posting and reading on the 240 Forum. I have always worked on my own car mainly 240's from year 86-91.. This may be a long post so bear with me and thanks for any help..
Anyway yesterday I just bought a 92' 960 sedan really cheap that has many issues. The 24 valve engine makes me nervous and I am hoping I havent gotten myself into something that is going to eat my wallet.. Here is a list of problems the car is having and any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. I dont have much money to put into this car but I do have access to a pik-a-part nearby with a lot of Volvos..
What year and makes are compatible with this car?
The big main issue is the front-end. When you turn the wheel L or R from a start or low speed it shakes and seems loose. The car front shakes around 45-50 mph and when your driving at any speed there is much play in the front-end. It seems like the tires are loose and going to get away from me. Seems like they are floating L to R and any moment something could snap and the tire turn sideways. When going down a hill and I hit the brakes the whole car front shakes violently.
I jacked up the car and shook both front tires 9-3 and 12-6 position and it is tight with no play. At the most the passenger wheel moved 1/8-1/4" but everything seemed tight. There is also a thumping sound from the rear right wheel area when I go over a bump. What all should I check first?
* Electric sunroof is having problems. It will go back or foward but only about 8-10" and gets stuck. I have to push it to fully close.
* Passenger power seats do not work. Driver side is fine.
Radiator light comes on a off on the dash. Car makes hot water noise after driving 30 or more minutes. Sounds like the coolant is really hot and hissing when I turn the car off.
* AC blower is weird. I can turn the fan on and hear it blowing but nothing comes out of the vents..
* Car does not have any power. When driving over the mountain home it was loosing alot of power and I had to keep punching the accelarator to maintain a 55 mph speed. This seems like a pretty big motor and should be this slow and gutless..
Thats enough to get me started with this project. I paid $600 for the car. The exterior is in perfect condition. The tires are new.
