Questions on a 1983 242DL 200 1983

Hi all,
you helped me fix my squealing belts. Now I have some other questions. First, I've got a rattle in I'm guessing the catalytic converter. When I'm idling at a light, I can hear a steady rattle. Does this mean it is time for a new one? Second, what how does the thermastat thing in the air box help the engine run? Would it be bad if I just took it out? I'm thinking I probably need a new one, but I'm not sure what symptoms to look for. Thanks again all!
