I replaced the starter in my '87 240 three months ago because the solenoid housing cracked on the old one. The new starter was one of the newer, smaller ones. Seemed to me that it had a bit of a scraping noise, but it worked OK.
No problems until tonight. 2-3 short trips around town, then got in it and car wouldn't crank at all. Dash lights come on, headlights and other accesories dim/voltmeter drops when you turn the key. All wires connected clean and tight at the starter and battery. All other electrical accessories seem OK.
I assume the dimming/meter drop means the solenoid is engaging, is that right?
Could it be anything other than a bad starter motor?
TIA,
DS
PS: Died in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Why couldn't it be the battery?
