What is this? In front of AT shift lever 200 1993

I took the cover off to get to the light bulb on the automatic shift of my 93 240 and found a piece of black plastic floating loose that looks to have been connected to a silver cable that disapears into the front of the shifter area. It reminds me of a bicycle brake cable with a small ball on the end to hold it in the plastic piece.

Additionally, it looks like the brake/shift lock override button when pushed would end up pulling on the cable.

So I am wondering what the cable is and what it does. If it is the shift lock cable what are the implications of leaving it disconnected?

Thanks

Ken
