Slight overheat

89 245 man, a/c etc.

Car has a slight overheat. It's not a problem, but I notice it's not in that "sweet spot" slightly below the halfway point I'm used to in my good ol' 83 242 B23. Why might this be? For starters, it's got a head gasket leak, so the pressurized system isn't. I have "released" the pressure by opening the reservoir tank just enough, then duct taped it close. Unless I answered my own question, I feel there might be more to it. Some temperature sensor thing?
Also it starts a little hesitantly. I know, I know one question at a time.
