Tips on replacing Oil Breather Box and hoses 200 1988

Hi- I have ordered a new flame trap, oil breather box, necessary hoses, and o-ring for this job (my main seal is dripping slowly), hope this cures it. I know the hose under the breather box (to inside oil pan) isn't supposed to be disturbed, but what if it's clogged with crud? Is there a way to clear or check it without knocking it into the bottom of the oil pan? Any other tips appreciated, I have read the FAQ's but I'm tired and possibly skipped over something important. Thanks in advance- B.
