crank and cam position sensors? 900

What are these things? My 94 960 just quits in the middle of the road while I'm driving. It always starts back up but I have lousy acceleration, kind of jerky at a constant speed. Sometimes at idle the tach shows 0 even though the engine is running. Could these things be the culprit?
