Help me with my drivers door handle, please 700 1989

It quit working yesterday,
OK..I have it off the door, and all looks well and seems to function right. The pivot pin is intact. I put it back on and connect it all back up. When I pull on the handle, it lifts the chrome rod, but it does not seem to go far enough. I can reach into the door and lift the rod higher, and the catch in the latch that I have pushed back manually will release. There is no problem with the inner door handle releasing, but I do note that it connects on the opposite side of the latch (can't see it, just can feel it).
This door was fiddled with by the prior owner, replacing the lock. It has been hard to close ever since I got it, if that means anything.

Thanks for all help. I need it. I know I am missing what is right in front of me.
