240 wagon hatch lock 200 1991

I just bought my first brick! a 1991 240 wagon that was very well taken care of with a few things that need to be taken care of. the first problem I'd like to tackle myself is the rear hatch. the release is fine, the problem is it won't lock. it seems like a connection between the latch and locking mechanism may be missing or broken.

my questions are: 1. how do i open the panel on the rear hatch to access the mechanism? 2. what should i be looking for? (pictures are a big help if provided) and 3. things i should avoid when repairing this?
