Strange clutch pedal behavior 200 1984

When my car (240 turbo) is cold or has sat for a while, the clutch pedal is smooth and relatively easy to push in (has intercooler'stepped' flywheel & PP). But after driving for a while, the pedal gets kinda 'ratchety' for lack of a better word and noticeably harder to push. This is annoying and is making me want an automatic! What could be the cause? It's obviously heat-related. Could the cable be somehow affected by the heat. But there shouldn't be that much heat around the clutch cable I'm thinking. Also, what does the clutch pedal pivot on? a bushing, bearings? Could that be the problem? If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. Thanks.
