FYI Flame trap hose issues 200 1988

Here is an FYI for my fellow Volvo 200 and 700 owners, 88 and newer. I just discovered that the 1.5 year old flame trap hose on my 240, the s shaped one from the breather box to flame trap was failing due to poor construction. This was one of the after market hoses commonly found at our favorite parts suppliers for less than $2.00. The hose had gotten very brittle, was split on the ends and had cracks in the middle, almost all the way through the hose. In a few more months it would have been leaking. I would hate to see what would happen on a turbo engine with the extra heat under the hood; I'm sure it would have failed much sooner. That hose is a pain to get at, but if you installed an after market one you may want to take a look at it before you start having ventilation problems. It was replaced by a $8 genuine Volvo hose from the dealer, ouch, but I'm sure it will last a lot longer. I may have gotten one from a bad lot, but it is worth inspecting.
