Strange voltage regulator 700 1986

Friend with an '87 740 has needed a jump start several mornings this week. Battery is not that old. I suspected charging issues due to worn alternator brushes, and headed over with my spare Bosch 1 197 311 022 voltage regulator to swap in. Lo and behold, this vehicle has a normal looking Bosch 70 amp alternator with the usual three connections on the back (thick red wire, thin red wire, ground wire), but also a two pin connector to the voltage regulator itself. Never seen this one before. What are these two extra wires for?
