Leaking Rear Pinion Seal and Noise 200

Hi Gang

Well What can I say ………..

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1993 240 SW that had a leaking rear pinion seal

Because of a shoulder operation I took it to a mechanic that does work for me time to time.

I purchased the seal fro FPC and had him install the seal, he added /toped off the fluid.
I observed the installation ( I think)

Well some 800 miles later I turned the radio off ( traveling on the interstate at 70 MPH )
I heard a slight noise/hum, so when I arrived home I checked the seal and level of the rear.
Low and be hold the seal is leaking again and I had to add about ½ qt. to the rear.

After doing this I took it back to the mechanic and he and I went for a short ride in the car as I suggested to listen to the noise………..
Well his response was he did not hear anything, and responded with it was tire noise. Ha.Ha.

Went the next day on the interstate 90 miles round trip and the noise–hum is louder

Being some what experienced with cars (GM / Ford) I know what a bad rear sounds like. And today I will lay odds it’s a bad something, but not knowing Volvo that well yet I am not sure.

Can a rear be repaired ( hum noise – bearings etc) or is the ring and pinion gone bad?

What rear should be used in this car 1993 240 SW.

Can a 1989 rear be used?

What about gear ratio, I believe they are 3.73?

Can I use a rear from a stick shift, which I believe to have a 3.50?

Why is because of the gas mileage.

Would a 3.50 rear give the 4 cyl. Better gas mileage at 65 – 75 MPH on the high way?

Would this be OK on the drivability of the car / 4cyl.

Thanks
Regards
JR
