AC acting weird 700 1991

I have a really nice '91 745t. The AC blows nice and cold when the vehicle is at rest. But at highway speeds, it can barely keep the vehicle interior cool. There is a noticible difference in the temperature of the air coming from the vents at highway speeds. This is upside down from my past experience with older european cars which were ok at speed, but poor AC performance around town. Any ideas?
