Strut replacement. 200 1990

There's some knocking noises when I go over bumps in my "new" '90 240 sedan. The ball joints, stabalizer bar and tie rods were easy enough to check and it's not any of those. The car has 112K on it and as far as I can tell the struts are original so I'm going to replace them, and do the bushings while I'm in there.
I've read some pretty good step-by-steps in the archives and FAQ, but I'm somewhat unclear about the special tools I might need, if any. I have spring compressors and a good selection of various size pipe wrenches. Will I need a gland tool, or one of those hook shaped strut tools?
With the bushings for the lower A frame are those something I'll be able to change out myself, or am I looking at a trip to the maching shop?
Thanks for your feedback.
