kickdown cable not retracting fully - methods of fixing 200 1991

The kickdown cable is not retracting fully. Used some WD-40 and silicone spray to some effectiveness in getting the cable to retract, but once the car accelerates the cable remains slack. Any methods to helps me get the cable to retract and not go slack upon acceleration? Thanks in advance. George
