possible head gasket failure 200 1991

my recently purchased 91 240 wagon was recently serviced and i had the mechanic adjust the valve clearance and replace both tie rod ends. I went ahead and had him replace my valve cover gasket too. this evening i looked at my engine to look at the work and make sure it was fine, i noticed the block (red block) was slightly covered in oil. I had the valve cover gasket replaced because it was leaking and i was optimistic in replacing the flame trap myself but think i may just have someone more knowlegable do it and show me first. the possibilities i have in my mind is that the head gasket is leaking because of the flametrap being clogged and a new tight valve cover seal could be forcing the pressure throught the head gasket. Or the mechanic was sloppy and the block was slightly covered in oil when he was done, Or it may just be that the head gasket is going out. If i were to go on the flame trap theory and it turns out to be clogged should i be fine or replace the head gasket? is there a better indicator that i need to replace my head gasket?
