Grinding noise in reverse gear in M46 700 1991

Hi, I have a 91 turbo wagon with the M46 tranny.

There is an intermittent (every 10th time?) low pitch grinding noise sometimes when going in reverse, becoming more frequent. I think it is when backing up AFTER turning to pull into a parking spot forwards. Besides a noise, there is a real resistance / load on the car going backwards. ie. I have to give it more gas. The clutch is new, tranny fluid changed, new center bearing in drive shaft.

I was thinking of the differential becasue of the connection to turning. Besides changing the fluid, what else can I look for / do?

Thanks.
