MY '93 960 - Timing Belt Failure - Mechanics won't fix 900 1993

Ok, so you might have read that I had my timing belt fail on my '93 960. I have a couple of local mechanics that I trust and have worked with in the past. Unfortunately, both of them told me that particular engine is too tough to work on because the damage can be quite extensive when a timing belt fails. I purchased the green book on engines from Volvo Tech Info, and it doesn't look too difficult to take the head off, but based upon my mechanics hesitancy, I'm a little nervous to get into it. So tell me, are these engines that difficult to take apart and get back together? It doesn't seem too difficult based upon what I read. I've read some people state that they won't take the head off to examine the valves without the engine lifted out, but then I've also read about some people who can get the engine apart in a couple hours to determine how extensive the damage is.

The car is now in my driveway and I'm chomping at the bit to start working on the engine, but I want to make sure I'm not getting myself into something too big. I'm mechanically inclined, but don't have all the tools that I will probably need and can get if need be. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve
