tranny is stuck in 1rst 200

My brother's car is stuck in 1rst gear and can't shift out (and thus can't even start the car). I'd really appreciate any help on figuring out what is wrong...

From what he told me over the phone here is what happened:
- He took it for a drive, after letting it sit during his month long exam period. Each shift was somewhat noisy, but not much more than usual. When he got home, he put it in reverse, and heard a loud noise. He put the car into neutral, and then first to see if the other gears worked and the lever got stuck in 1rst. He says the lever also felt very 'loose'.

If anyone has any idea what has gone wrong/broken, please let me know!

PS- The car is an '88 with an automatic tranny
