loss of engine power 200 1992

the engine has been going in and out of fits of loss power. the engine will idle but when you try to add gas the engine stalls. what i have read was this problem could be the AMM not working. i listened for the fuel pump and could hear it come on. what else could it be ? when the engine is off for a few minuites it starts up and acts normal. any idea ? thanks rich
