My wife returned from a 120 mile round trip in her 1990 wagon (155,000 miles) and noticed a new noise yesterday. Last night we found that the gasket between the head and the exhaust manifold at #2 cylinder had failed. There is a very noticeable exhaust leak. I have ready as may posts as I could last night on exhaust gaskets and PB Blaster for the nuts. I plan to replace the gaskets at each cylinder, but still have a few questions:
Can the manifold be left connected to the exhaust system, unbolted and pulled away from the head far enough to effect the repair, or should I plan to remove the manifold entirely?
How hard is it to remove the old gasket material from the head/manifold?
Is this a failure which I should forsee for my other 240 which has 166,000 miles?
Thanks.
