Removing hood release cable sheath? 200 1986

One of my 240s had a slight incident with a deer before I got it and the PO decided the best way to get the hood open was to cut the release cable, sheath and all, and run the wire out between the fender and hood.

So I've got several donor cars for this part but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the sheath to pop out of it's mounting hole in the body. I can't even figure out if it's supposed to be pushed/pulled from the engine side or the cabin side, it's pretty deep, dark and mysterious down there.

Any ideas?
