Taking apart a Bosh alternator for '92 240 200

I am working on cleaning up the front of my engine after discovering a slight oil leak, and having the alternator off, I thought I could take the cover off and clean up the sludge/gunk collected on there before reinstalling. The alternator looks like this:

(only mine's much dirtier) ...and the case is held together with four long phillips-head machine screws. Those screws aren't budging, and I partially stripped one of them in the process of trying. I have tried soaking with PB Blaster, but to no avail.

Anyone know, is there a way to get this alternator apart without special tools? It seems to be intentionally difficult to open up, otherwise they probably would have used 6-point bolts instead of @#$%! screws.
