How can I do away with the AC compressor? 240 200 1988

My AC compressor is shot and I am in the middle of a water pump job on my 88 240 wagon. I would like to remove the compressor and substitute an idler of some kind, to keep the steering pump tuning at the right speed.
Has anyone done this? Thanks, Larry
