Guys,
I am looking at a 1985 244 Turbo Intercooler. The original owner is selling the car. He is a recently retired college professor who used the 244 primarily for commuting to and from work. The car has only 134,000 miles and comes with a manila file folder of all maintenance records dating back to 3/85!
It was garaged at the owner's home and also at the school. Paint looks great, it's kind of a dark metallic maroon. I can't find the color code, but I am pretty sure that this was a stock color for 1985?
Interior is black leather, also in great condition. Driver's seat could use a little work, think that IPD still carries the rebuild kits.
Mechanically, it is pretty solid. New front brake pads and rotors, and new rear pads (rotors turned) in November of 2006. Has a nice set of MXV4's with about 10,000 miles of wear.
He has replaced the blower motor, trailing arm bushings, radiator, cat converter, fuel pump and wiring harness. Otherwise, the car is substantially original.
The turbocharger has never been replaced. Should I worry about that? It is an oil-cooled Garrett T3. I didn't check for play in the shaft, but it seems to boost just fine from what I could tell. The boost needle goes into the yellow range and there is a very noticeable increase in power at about 2500 rpm. At 3800 and WOT it pegs at the end of the yellow range and the car feels like it just 'found' an extra 25 ponies. Is this the IBS circuit kicking in? I seem to remember something about the intercooled turbos having a circuit that increases boost at around 4K rpm.
The transmission has never been serviced (other than flushes) either. AW71. It shifts well, but under full throttle the shifts are very firm. I also couldn't get it to kick-down at highway speeds using the gas pedal. Is this normal?
What is a fair price? He wants $2,500.00.
