Last night I pulled the overdrive out of my 66 p1800 to replace the
paper gaskets between the adapter and the tranny. I was leaking very
badly and had ruined the rear tranny mount. In doing so I also
replace the gasket on the rear cover , the one that has the rear
bearing in it that supports the output shaft.
The rear of the tranny was very dirty and needed cleaning so i
removed the rear cover c ring and pryed the cover back so that I
could get the gunk of the back of the tranny. after cleaning, I used
plenty of silicone and cut a slice in the gasket so i could get it
over the cover. Gently tapped the cover and rear out put shaft in
place and replaced the cover to overdrive gasket. Bolted everything
up, filled it with oil and took it for a test drive.
I have 1st, 2nd ,and 4th; the car won't go into third. 4th gear
feels funny.
What did I do ti create this problem? Did I pull the mainshaft out
to far causing the synchro to misalign? To much silicone on the
rear cover causing clearence problems?
Help I have no experience in this problem .
