Strange noise 200 1985

I have noticed a strange noise coming from underneath my 85 240 dl wagon while driving .It sounds like noise made by small rocks hitting wheel wells when driving on dirty street.(crackling) I can hear it only when driving with the open window next to a concrete median or another car.Is the exhaust a possible suspect?
