740T Alternator belt problem 700

My 740 Turbo alternator belt broke after routine replacement about 4 months ago. The alternator was free so I replaced it with a new one. My question is can an alternator lock-up with a bad bearing, brake the belt and become free again? I just did not understand this almost new belt braking because it was installed by a very good mechanic, not me. Thanks Jim
