Question regarding new rear main seal 200 1993

Hello: thought I would ask the experts. Our 93 240 needs a new rear main engine seal. the shop says it's not a huge rush but should be changed eventually. They quoted us between three or four hundred dollars for the job.
Does this sound in the ballpark ? Also, are we taking a chance by waiting ? Can this become a catastrophie ? Thanks. BTW, the car has nearly 180K, everything else looks great per the shop.
