potential trans swap 200 1981

I currently have an AW55, and would like to put in an AW70/71. I know that I will need the front portion of the driveshaft, as well as the wiring and shifter to complete the swap. What I would like to know is if it is possible to use an AW70/71 from a newer ('86 and up) model in the '81 and convert to the cable drive for the speedo. Any other gotchas to look out for would be appreciated.
