Ok, our '91 740 Wagon is looking like it needs replacing. Just too many little things that need to be done and a couple are beyond my comfort zone of auto work (ac, headliner, exhaust gasket, odd tire wear, etc. etc.). We have absolutely loved this car but need to step up a bit and honestly replacing it will be cheaper than having all the minor repairs done.
This will be a daily driver vehicle and also used for road trips with a trailer.
Key decision factors:
1. Safety. Must have at least driver & pass. side airbags.
2. Reliability / maintenance costs. I don't want to be breaking down with the trailer in Podunk, AL and get the 3-day parts delay + out-of-towner pricing. Porous block reports on 965s have me very worried. Do the 96-97 models have less trouble with this? The b230 in my 740 has been a dream, which makes that 945 real tempting.
3. Must work as a tow vehicle. 2500-2700 lb. (loaded weight) travel trailer (17') will be towed by our new vehicle next summer.
4. Comfort. 2 hour drives are common for us. 6-10 hours in the car every once in awhile.
5. Mileage. Both vehicles look to have acceptable mileage ratings. 745 we have has been great with 28 on the highway.
I'm no mechanic but I handle simple stuff like changing oil, filters, trans. fluid, fuses, etc. pretty easily. Wife hates me to do anything more serious and prefers professionals take care of it, so repairs get pricey fast.
We have lots of time to look. Our 745 works ok for now and we will likely be doing research and trying to decide exactly what we want for a couple of months and then start hunting for exactly the right one in August, so rarity of those 95 945s isn't a huge issue. Honestly if it takes us until November to find what we want and we have to drive 100 miles to see it, that's fine.
Any input or advice is greatly appreciated.
