Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 900 1994

I've been having starting problems with the 940. It was towed in, the mechanic said that the spark plugs were full of gas. He dried them out and got the car started. Said it pulled an ECT sensor code, although I replaced it a year or so ago. Still have the starting problem; it won't start, and you can smell gas.

Went to inspect the ECT sensor, and the plastic inside the plug basically has disintegrated, leaving the connector wires basically floating. So the plug pulled out and the wires are free. I have cleaned the connectors, and am going to temporarily plug the wire connectors directly on the pins in the ECT. Problem: Which wire goes on which pin? Does the yellow wire or the yellow/BLK stripe wire go on the pin closest to the front of the car.

Perhaps unrelated problem: THe engine temp gauge was a little shakey, and now it doesn't register at all. Is this likely a gauge or sensor problem?

Thanks for the help.

Mike
