Dead battery after stopping 700

My wife was driving our 740 turbo and stopped at a mall for a brief period and then when she returned to the car the battery was dead and she had to jump the car and the car ran fine until she got home. Any reason for such a quick drain on a battery? alternator suddenly failed?
